Description:

Patients: This phase 2 study involved 416 women with metastatic breast cancer. They ranged in age from 27 to 84 years old. The majority (over 75%) were postmenopausal.

Treatment: Patients were treated with chemotherapy drugs; paclitaxel and carboplatin, docetaxel and gemcitabine, or paclitaxel alone.

Toxicity: One woman in the group taking paclitaxel and carboplatin died. She had grade 3 diarrhea and grade 4 neutropenia and died from sepsis. Patients treated with docetaxel and gemcitabine were more likely to have severe neutropenia, thrombocytopenia, anemia, and leucopenia. Patients treated with paclitaxel (either alone or with carboplatin) were more likely to have sensory neuropathy. Severe mucositis and alopecia were more common in the groups receiving gemcitabine and docetaxel or paclitaxel and carboplatin than those treated with paclitaxel alone.

Results: The median overall survival was 29.9 months for those women taking paclitaxel and carboplatin; 26.9 months for those taking gemcitabine and docetaxel; and 41 months for those taking paclitaxel alone.
