Description:

Patients: This study involved 1,805 eligible patients with resectable rectal cancer. Patients were divided into two groups: Group 1 comprised of 897 patients, and Group 2 comprised of 908 patients.

Treatment: Patients in Group 1 were treated with preoperative radiotherapy followed by total mesorectal excision. Patients in Group 2 were treated with total mesorectal excision alone.

Toxicity: As of February 2001, 365 of the 1805 patients had died. Of the 365 deaths, 61 occurred postoperatively.

Results: Overall survival at two years was 82.0% for patients in Group 1 and 81.8% in group 2.
