Description:

Patients: This Phase I trial included 45 patients, 43 of which were evaluable for response. These 43 patients were comprised of 25 patients with glioblastoma multiforme, 9 patients with metastasis from other cancers, 6 patients with anaplastic astrocytoma, 2 patients with mixed anaplastic glioma, and 1 patient with an anaplastic oligondendroglioma.

Treatment: Treatments consisted of the chemotherapy drugs BCNU plus temozolomide (temodar) at different doses.

Toxicity: Because this was a Phase I study, one objective was to determine the maximum tolerated dose. Toxicities included: leucopenia and thrombocytopenia (never greater than grade 2), and grade 4 pulmonary toxicity.

Results: There were a total of 9 partial responses, five of these were patients with glioblastoma. Survival rates were not discussed.
