Description:

Patients: This Phase I study involved 22 patients with advanced breast cancer (10 patients) and other tumors (12 patients).

Treatment: The treatment consisted of Bcl-2 antisense (G3139 or Genasense) and the chemotherapy drug docetaxel (taxotere). Bcl-2 is a type of protein that is thought to make cells more resistant to apoptosis (programmed cell death) and Genasense targets this protein.

Toxicity: Grade 3-4 toxicities included fatigue, nausea/vomiting, anorexia, pleural effusion, neutropenia, and anemia.

Results: There were two objective responses in the breast cancer patients. Overall survival was not discussed.

Support: Support for this study was provided by Genta, Inc. and Aventis Pharmaceuticals. Genta manufactures Genasense. Taxotere is manufactured by Aventis.
