Description:

Patients: This Phase II trial involved 18 patients with advanced renal cell carcinoma; 13 men and 5 women. Median age was 59 years. Prior therapies included: nephrectomy (15 patients), radiation therapy (7 patients), and immunotherapy (18 patients). No patients had undergone previous chemotherapy or hormonal therapy.

Treatment: The treatment consisted of the chemotherapy drug Iressa (gefitinib,(ZD1839).

Toxicity: Grade 2 toxicities included alopecia, diarrhea, dyspnea, hyperglycemia, ocular-vision, rash, and elevated enzymes. The study’s authors concluded that the grade 3 and 4 toxicities (creatinine and neuropathy) were not related to the drug.

Results: There were no complete or partial responses.
