Description:

Patients:
This study involved male patients with advanced castration-resistant prostate cancer that were divided into two separate treatment groups. Group A included 37 patients with a median age of 72 years. Group B consisted of 35 patients with a median age of 70 years.

Treatments:
Patients in group A were treated with the chemotherapy agents docetaxel and epirubicin. Group B was given the chemotherapy agent docetaxel and the hormone prednisone.

Toxicities:
The maximum adverse reaction level for each group was grade 4. Patients in group A reported grade 3-4 neutropenia, anemia, and nail changes. Group B reported grade 3-4 neutropenia and nausea/vomiting.

Results:
The reported median overall survival reported for groups A and B was 27.3 and 19.8 months, respectively.
