Description:

Patients: This Phase II study involved 29 patients with advanced metastatic renal cell carcinoma. The median age was 55. Nineteen had undergone previous nephrectomy and most had received other prior therapies.

Treatment: The treatment consisted of the drug thalidomide (thalomid).

Toxicity: Four patients died within 30 days of treatment but the authors did not associate these deaths with treatment toxicities. Grade 3 toxicities included somnolence, constipation, venous thrombosis, and poor wound healing.

Results: There was one partial response and one minor response. Overall median survival was 3.5 months.
