Description:

Patients:
This phase 2 study involved advanced non-small cell lung cancer patients with no previous chemotherapy who were divided into two separate treatment groups. In group A, there were 41 patients with a median age of 65 years and 73.2% male. Group B had 43 patients with a median age of 67 years and 72.1% male.

Treatment:
Patients in group A were treated with the chemotherapy agents carboplatin and paclitaxel.

Patients in group B were treated with the chemotherapy agents gemcitabine and vinorelbine.

Toxicities:
There was one treatment-related death due to pneumonia in group A. Grade 3 nausea and neurotoxicity were also reported.

Three treatment-related deaths due to infection and shock were reported for group B. Grade 4 liver toxicity was also reported.

Results:
The median overall survival for groups A and B was 5.9 and 6.0 months, respectively.
