Patients: This study involved 109 patients with advanced hepatocellular carcinoma. The patients ranged in age from 38 to 84 years. The majority were men, and most cases were caused by ethanol (alcohol) use or hepatitis C virus.

Treatment: Patients were divided into two groups, and received either the chemotherapy drug tamoxifen or tamoxifen and the hormonal therapy octreotide.

Toxicity: Grade 3 nausea, diarrhea, flush, and gynaecomastia were each reported in one patient. Four patients stopped being in the study because of treatment-related toxicity, and one patient stopped the treatments due to diarrhea.

Results: The median overall survival was 6 months for patients treated with tamoxifen only and 3 months for patients treated with tamoxifen and octreotide.

Support: This study was supported by Novartis. Novartis develop markets octreotide as Sandostatin®LAR.
