Description:

Patients: This phase II study involved 76 patients, 51 with glioblastoma multiforme and 19 with anaplastic astrocytoma.

Treatment: Patients were treated with the chemotherapy drugs cisplatin, hydroxyurea, and cytosine arabinoside (Ara-C).

Toxicities: Two patients died of sepsis. Grade 4 hematological toxicities were reported in 20 patients, including thrombocytopenia and neutropenia. Other grade 3 and 4 toxicites were creatinine increase, infection, nausea, inner ear hearing loss, and fatigue.

Results: The median overall survival was 7 months for patients with anaplastic astrocytoma and 5 months for those with glioblastoma multiforme.
