Description:

Patients:
This phase 2 study involved 21 patients with metastatic melanoma. The median age of the patient group was 58 (range of 33-83) years and 62% were male.

Treatment:
Patients were treated with a biologic therapy agent called imatinib mesylate, which inhibits protein tyrosine kinases that are involved in the growth of cancer cells.

Toxicities:
The most severe toxicities reported were one case each of grade 4 fatigue and edema (fluid retention). Other toxicities included grade 1 and 2 nausea and anorexia.

Results:
The median overall survival was reported as 7.5 months.
