Description:

Patients:
This study involved 39 melanoma patients. The median age was 61 years (range 29-89) and 74% were male.

Treatment:
Patients were given two chemotherapy agents, karenitecin (a topoisomerase inhibitor) and valproic acid (a histone deacetylase inhibitor), which cause DNA damage and cancer cell death.

Toxicities:
The highest toxicity grade reported was grade 4, due to low neutrophil count (4 patients) and low hemoglobin levels (3). Grade 3 neurological toxicities were also reported (confusion in 2 patients and drowsiness in 1 patient).

Results:
The median overall survival for this study was 7.5 months.
