Description:

Patients: This study involved 35 patients with progressive or recurrent malignant gliomas. Twenty-six had glioblastoma multiforme and 9 had various types of anaplastic gliomas.

Treatment: Irinotecan (Camptosar, CPT-11) in escalating doses.

Toxicity: Primarily hematologic toxicity. Grade 3-4 diarrhea, vomiting, nausea, abdominal cramping, asthenia/fatigue, and neutropenia.

Results: Median survival for all patients was 8.5 months.

Support: The study was supported by a “grant-in-aid” from Pharmacia Corporation and two of the study’s authors are either employees or consultants of Pharmacia. Phamacia is involved in the sale of CPT-11.
