Description:

Patients: This phase 2 study involved 27 patients with newly diagnosed glioblastoma multiforme. Their median age was 52 years old. Most (16) had received surgery for their brain tumor.

Treatment: Patients were treated with biological drug erlotinib, the chemotherapy temozolomide, and radiation therapy.

Toxicity: One patient died of sepsis (blood infection) without neutropenia. One died of pneumonia. Two patients died from refractory bone marrow aplasia, which means their bone marrow stopped working to produce immune system cells. Grade 3 or 4 toxicities included thrombocytopenia, anemia, lymphopenia, fatigue, and febrile neutropenia.

Results: The median overall survival was 8.6 months.
