Description:

Patients: This Phase III study involved 278 patients with advanced (stage IIIB-IV) non-small cell cancer. (The study started with 400 patients, but two accrual groups were terminated early.) Patients were divided into two groups – Group 1 contained 140 patients, Group 2 contained 138 patients.

Treatment: Patients in Group 1 were administered two chemotherapy drugs, vinorelbine (navelbine) and cisplatin (platinol). Patients in Group 2 were administered two chemotherapy drugs, gemcitabine and cisplatin.

Toxicity: In Group 1, grade 4 toxicities included hematologic and vomiting. Other toxicities (grade 3 and less) included constipation, peripheral neurotoxicity, alopecia, and phlebitis.

Results: Median survival for patients in Group 1 was 9.0 months.
