Description:

Patients: This Phase II study involved 21 patients with unresectable or metastatic renal cell carcinoma;16 men and 5 women. Prior therapies included nephrectomy (13 patients) and immunotherapy (11 patients).

Treatment: The treatment consisted of chemotherapy (paclitaxel (taxol)), immunotherapy (interferon-alpha), and biologic therapy (cis-retinoic acid).

Toxicity: Grade 4 toxicities included neutropenia and weight loss.

Results: The median survival was 9.5 months.

Support: The trial was supported in part by Bristol-Myers Squibb and Schering Pharmaceuticals. In addition, two of the four authors of the study received funding from one or both of these companies.
