Description:

Patients: This Phase III study involved 509 patients with advanced (stages IIIA, IIIB, and IV) non-small-cell lung cancer. None of the patients had been administered prior chemotherapy. Patients were divided into two groups. Group A contained 252 patients and Group B contained 257 patients.

Treatment: Patients in Group B were administered two drugs, paclitaxel (taxol) and gemcitabine (gemzar).

Toxicity: Grade 3-4 toxicities for patients in Group B included hematologic, fever, nausea/vomiting, alopecia, neurotoxicity, nephrotoxicity, diarrhea, arthralgia/myalgia, fatigue, and allergic reactions.

Results: Overall median survival for patients in Group B was 9.8 months.
