Description:

Patients:
This phase 2 study involved women with metastatic breast cancer who were divided into two different patient groups. Group A included 46 patients who had been previously treated with taxane-based chemotherapy; the median patient age was 52 years. Group B included 47 previously untreated patients with a median age of 54 years.

Treatment:
Patients in both groups were treated with the chemotherapy agents pegylated liposomal doxorubicin and carboplatin.

Toxicities:
The most severe toxicities in group A were of grade 4 and included thrombocytopenia, leukopenia, and neutropenia. Grade 3 fatigue was also reported.

The most severe toxicities in group B were of grade 4 and included thrombocytopenia, leukopenia, and neutropenia. Grade 3 fatigue was also reported.

Results:
The median overall survival for groups A and B was 13 and 33 months, respectively.
