Description:

Patients: This Phase II study involved a total of 90 patients with hormone refractory prostate cancer. Patients were divided into two groups of 45 patients each: Group 1 and Group 2.

Treatment: For patients in Group 1 the treatment consisted of a combination of two chemotherapy drugs, estramustine (emcyt) and vinblastine (velban).

Toxicity: Two deaths “possibly related to treatment” occurred in this group. (One was from myocardial infarction and the other from cerebrovascular accident.) In addition, grade 3-4 toxicities included: diarrhea, nausea, neurological, bilirubin rise, and hematologic.

Results: Median survival was 44 weeks (10.1 months).
