Description:

Patients: This Phase II trial involved 58 patients with metastatic renal cell carcinoma; 41 men and 17 women. Median age was 57 years. Prior treatments included nephrectomy (44 patients), radiation therapy (8 patients), and chemotherapy (4 patients).

Treatment: Treatment consisted of immunotherapy (interleukin-2 and interferon-alpha) with chemotherapy (5-Fluorouracil) and biologic therapy (cis-retinoic acid).

Toxicity: Six patients died within the first eight weeks of treatment but these deaths were associated with the cancer and not the treatment. A seventh patient died of an acute cerebral vascular event a few days after completing a second cycle of treatment. In addition, grade 4 toxicities included hematologic, fever, and fatigue.

Results: Median overall survival was 10.9 months.
