Description:

Patients: This Phase II study involved 86 patients with stage IV non-small-cell lung cancer. None of the patients had prior chemotherapy.

Treatment: The treatment consisted of two drugs – gemcitabine (gemzar) and carboplatin (paraplatin). (Patients were divided into 4 groups and each group received the two drugs in a slightly different order and/or with different intervals.)

Toxicity: Toxicities included grade 1-4 hematologic and allergic reactions, and grade 3 or less skin rashes, liver toxicity, fatigue, nausea/vomiting, alopecia, and flu-like symptoms.

Results: Median survival for each group ranged from 7-13 months and overall median survival was 11 months.
