Description:

Patients:
This phase II study involved 61 patients with extensive-disease small-cell lung cancer who had not previously received chemotherapy. The median age was 65 years and 92% were male.

Treatment:
Patients were treated with the chemotherapy agents irinotecan and cisplatin, and the biological therapy agent simvastatin, which is a statin drug traditionally used as a cholesterol-lowering drug but may also inhibit cancer cell growth.

Toxicities:
There were two reported treatment-related deaths due to infection. Grade 3 diarrhea, anemia, and nausea/vomiting were also reported.

Results:
The median overall survival was 11 months.
