Description:

Patients: This Phase II study involved 33 women with advanced or metastatic (stage IIIB-IV) breast cancer. The median age was 59, and most participants were postmenopausal.

Treatment: Treatment included doxorubicin (50mg/m2) on day 1, followed by paclitaxel (160mg/m2) on day 2, and gemcitabine (800mg/m2) on day 6. This cycle was repeated every 21-28 days for a maximum of 8 cycles.

Toxicity: One patient died from septic shock during the first treatment cycle. In addition, grade 4 toxicities included: neutropenia, leukopenia, and diarrhea.

Results: The overall median survival was 36.4 months. The authors reported that this treatment regime appears to have anti tumor activity in anthrcycline naive metastatic breast cancers. However toxicity issues need to be resolved.
