Description:

Patients: This study involved 557 patients with resectable adenocarcinoma of the rectum who were divided into two groups: Group 1 contained 272 patients and Group 2 contained 285 patients.

Treatment: Patients in Group 1 received preoperative radiotherapy (RT+) followed by surgery within a week. Patients in Group 2 received surgery alone.

Toxicity: Thirteen patients from Group 1 died within 6 months of surgery. Cardiovascular death was the main cause.

Results: Overall 5-year survival in patients who received radiotherapy plus surgery (Group 1) was 46%. Overall median survival was not presented.
