Description:

Patients: Thirty-two patients (21 men, 11 women) with biopsy-proven adenocarcinoma of the rectum were enrolled in this Phase II study. All patients were staged at T3.

Treatment: Treatment consisted of radiotherapy with concurrent chemotherapy, CPT-11 (camptosar) and 5-FU (FUDR), followed by surgical resection (6-10 weeks after completing chemoradiotherapy).

Toxicity: Acute toxicity was frequently observed, and 18 patients required either a chemotherapy dose reduction or RT interruption of more than days. One patient withdrew because of diarrhea and abdominal cramping (Grade III) after 10 days of treatment. Other grade 3 toxicities included: mucositis, diarrhea, rectal sores, and nausea/vomiting.

Results: Twenty-three of the thirty-two patients were downstaged. Overall survival was not discussed.
