Description:

Patients: This Phase II study involved 40 patients (30 men, 10 women, median age 60) with advanced non-small-cell lung cancer. Thirty-three patients had received chemotherapy before the study.

Treatment: Treatment consisted of two chemotherapeutic agents: irinotecan and docetaxel.

Toxicity: Six patients died during treatment. In addition, grade 3-4 toxicities included neutropenia, diarrhea, fever, nausea, vomiting, fatigue, and anemia.

Results: The median overall survival was 7.4 months. Four patients achieved a partial response to treatment, and sixteen achieved stable disease. The authors concluded, "we believe that further investigation of irinotecan plus docetaxel in second line NSCLC is not recommended."
