Description:

Patients: This Phase II study involved 56 patients with glioblastoma multiforme, 18 with anaplastic astrocytoma, and 2 with anaplastic oligodendroglioma. Patients were either newly diagnosed or had recurrent tumors.

Treatment: Treatment consisted of two chemotherapy drugs, irinotecan (camptosar) plus BCNU.

Toxicity: There were five deaths associated with this treatment: four fatal infections and a death from pulmonary failure. Other toxicities included: thrombocytopenia, neutropenia, dairhhea/dehydration, thrombosis, transaminase, and ileus.

Results: Median overall survival for the glioblastoma patients with recurrent tumors was 32.6 weeks (7.6 months).
