Description:

Patients: This Phase III study involved a total of 607 patients with advanced (stage IIIB or IV or recurrent) non-small cell lung cancer. Patients were divided into three groups. Group A comprised 205 patients. Group B comprised 201 patients. Group C comprised 201 patients.

Treatment: Patients in Group A were treated with two drugs – gemcitabine (gemzar) and cisplatin (platinol).

Toxicity: In Group A, eight patients died of drug-related causes. Other toxicities included hematological (grade 3-4), peripheral neuropathy (grade 1-3), alopecia (grade 1-2), nausea/vomiting, constipation, renal insufficiency (grade 3 or 4), cardiovascular, and cutaneous.

Results: Overall survival for patients in Group A was 9.8 months.
