Description:

Patients:
This phase 3 study involved patients with non-small-cell lung cancer. Patients were divided into two separate treatment groups. In group A, there were 114 patients, 104 of whom were male, and the median age was 65 years. Group B consisted of 115 patients, 99 of whom were male, with a median age of 66 years.

Treatment:
Patients in group A were treated with the chemotherapy agents paclitaxel and liposomal cisplatin, which is cisplatin that is encapsulated in lipids to increase efficacy and lessen toxicity of the drug.

Patients in group B were treated with paclitaxel and standard cisplatin.

Toxicity:
The maximum toxicity level reported for both groups was grade 5. Causes of these deaths included heart attack, infection, and pulmonary embolism, although the treatment group in which each of these occurred was not specified. In addition, both groups reported grade 4 leukopenia and grade 3 alopecia.

Results:
The median overall survival was 9 months for group A and 10 months for group B.
