Description:

Patients:
This study involved 50 patients with unresectable malignant pleural mesothelioma. The median age was 69 (range of 36-80) and 88% were male. Patients had not received any prior chemotherapy or radiation.

Treatment:
Patients were administered a combination of the chemotherapy drugs cisplatin and gemcitabine (trade name Gemzar).

Toxicities:
The highest toxicity grade reported was grade 4. Some of the most common grade 3 or 4 toxicities were neutropenia (50% of patients), thrombocytopenia (32%), and fatigue (24%).

Results:
The median overall survival for this study was 10 months, with a range of 7-15 months.
