Description:

Patients:
This study involved malignant pleural mesothelioma patients who were divided into two separate treatment groups. Group A consisted of 17 patients with a median age of 66 years; 94% were male. Group B had 13 patients with a median age of 61 years; 69% were male.

Treatment:
Patients in group A received chemotherapy with cisplatin and pemetrexed.

Patients in group B received chemotherapy with cisplatin and gemcitabine.

Toxicities:
The most severe toxicity in group A was grade 4 neutropenia. Grade 3 anemia and low blood sodium were also reported.

The most severe toxicities in group B were grade 4 neutropenia and thrombocytopenia. Grade 3 anemia, anorexia, and nausea were also reported.

Results:
The median overall survival rates for groups A and B were 19.6 and 10.1 months, respectively.
