Description:

Patients:
This study involved non-squamous non-small-cell lung cancer patients, not previously treated with chemotherapy, who were separated into two different treatment groups. Group A had 541 patients with a median age of 60 years, 62% were male. Group B had 549 patients with a median age of 60 years; 61% were male.

Treatment:
Patients in group A were treated with the biologic therapy agent motesanib (an inhibitor of VEGF receptors and interferes with tumor blood supply) and the chemotherapy agents carboplatin and paclitaxel.
Patients in group B were treated with the chemotherapy agents carboplatin and paclitaxel alone.

Toxicities:
Treatment-related deaths due to respiratory failure, pulmonary embolism, and heart attack were reported in group A. Grade 3-4 neutropenia, diarrhea, pneumonia, and dehydration were also reported.

Treatment-related deaths due to respiratory failure, pneumonia, pulmonary embolism, and heart attack were reported in group B. Grade 3-4 neutropenia and shortness of breath were also reported.

Results:
The median overall survival times in groups A and B were 13.0 and 11.0 months, respectively.
