Description:

Patients:
This phase 2 study involved previously untreated non-small cell lung cancer patients who were divided into two separate treatment groups. Group A had 34 patients with a median age of 63 years, 76.5% of whom were male. Group B had 32 patients with a median age of 62.5 years, 68.8% of whom were male.

Treatment:
Patients in group A received chemotherapy with vinorelbine and cisplatin, and nitroglycerin, a biologic therapy agent that inhibits production of proteins that support tumor growth.

Patients in group B received chemotherapy with vinorelbine and cisplatin only.

Toxicities:
There was one treatment-related death in group A due to neutropenia and kidney failure. Grade 3-4 leucopenia and nausea were also reported.

There was one treatment-related death in group B due to pneumonia and sepsis. Grade 3-4 neutropenia and leucopenia were also reported.

Results:
The median overall survival rates for groups A and B were 11.0 and 12.1 months, respectively.
