Patients: This study involved 344 patients with stage IB non-small cell lung cancer. These patients ranged in age from 34 to 81 years of age. All had previously had surgery within 4-8 weeks of starting this study.

Treatment: Patients were treated with either the chemotherapy drugs paclitaxel and carboplatin, or no drug therapy (just observation).

Toxicity: Grade 4 toxicities were neutropenia, hyperglycemia, malaise/fatigue, dyspnea (shortness of breath), hypotension and phlebitis. The most common grade 4 toxicity was neutropenia, occurring in 38% of patients treated with the chemotherapy drugs.

Results: The median overall survival was 95 months in the chemotherapy group and 78 months in the observation group.
