What kind of cancer patient are you?

There are two kinds of cancer patients today: 1) Those who start their treatments blindly, treating their doctors like demigods, and hoping for the best, and 2) Those who have taken responsibility for their own health, want to learn as much as possible, and are willing to participate in their own treatment decisions. Studies have found that cancer patients in the second group tend to live longer and do better than patients in the first group. If you are in the first group, the information available on this website is not for you. Please feel free to leave. If you are in the second group, you will find the information available here both critical and empowering.

How is this information critical and empowering?

Cancer Monthly allows you to compare the survival rates and side effects of nearly 700 cancer treatments used by over 2,400 doctors in 340 hospitals in the U.S. and 20 other countries. This means that you can:

  • Find out which therapies delivered the longest survival
  • Learn how different treatments affected quality of life
  • Focus on more successful therapies and avoid failed ones
  • See how the newer modalities (such as biological therapies, immune therapies, and gene therapies) compare to the older ones (like chemo and radiation) in terms of results
  • See how other patients with the same type of cancer responded to different treatments
  • E-mail questions to doctors who are responsible for different therapies
  • Print out medical summaries to hand to your own doctor to discuss if a particular treatment is the right treatment for you.

Where does the information come from?

Our doctors (Ph.D.ís) find this information by reading through hundreds of medical journals in the peer reviewed medical and scientific literature. When they find an article about the results of a current cancer treatment, they pull out the critical facts such as the description of the treatment, the types of patients who received it, how long they survived, what the side effects were, which hospital was involved, the name of a doctor, etc.

How much does it cost?

It is free.

What do others say about Cancer Monthly?

We have dozens of testimonials. Hereís a recent one from a doctor:

As a health care provide and health educator, I want to take a moment to thank and congratulate you. I am, like most providers and specialists, inundated/assaulted with tons of less-than-optimal information regarding health care per se and especially cancer, but your work stands high above and reflects accuracy and integrity, two increasingly rare things in our profession and the world at large today. Thank you, on behalf of myself, my staff and our patients...

Most respectfully yours, Dr. James R. Bowman
